I’ve got a treat for all of you how about a full match from start to finish for you. Now the EFL Championship is perhaps the most competitive league in the world and the 2007/08 season was one of the most competitive ever with 1 week of the season it was uncertain who would take the ultimate prize of promotion to the Premier League. West Brom who made the FA Cup Semi Finals that under Tony Mowbray had taken 1 of the 2 automatic slots after a point against Southampton only 1 spot remained. Contesting it would be Stoke lead by Tony Pulis and Hull lead by Phil Brown who travelled to Ipswich. We focus on Stoke who needed a point to seal promotion to the Premier League for the first time ever and a top flight return after 23 years away. What stood between the Potters and the Premier League were Leicester City a club who had captured the hearts of millions in recent years from their unforgettable Premier League triumph under Claudio Ranieri in 2015/16 to the tragic death of their owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash outside of the ground in 2018/19 to winning the FA Cup for the first time ever under Brendan Rodgers in 2021. But here pre Vichai the club was dire straights. In this 2007/08 season 3 different managers came through the doors of what is now the King Power Stadium Martin Allen who started the season in the dug out left after friction with then owner Milan Mandaric over the potential signing of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Then Gary Megson departed after just 48 days to take the vacant seat at Bolton after Sammy Lee’s dismissal. So it was down to the ever outspoken Ian Holloway who came in from Plymouth and described taking up the Leicester job on ITV’s EFL Highlights show of the time The Championship as «His chance of a lifetime» but it had turned into a nightmare as defeat the previous week against relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday combined with Southampton’s point at West Brom 2 days later meant that the Foxes were only outside of the drop zone on goal difference. This was despite Leicester having the second meanest defence in the division only Crystal Palace had conceded fewer goals than the Foxes. Leicester had to match Southampton’s result against Sheffield United or the unthinkable would happen third tier football for the first time in their history. What would give in this final day encounter find out here.
