It was a night of firsts for Watford in their midweek goalless draw against Everton, with a first home Premier League (PL) point since November coming on the back of a top-flight record 11 successive home league losses. Not only that, Roy Hodgson’s side also secured a first home PL clean sheet after 22 failed attempts prior, which perhaps goes some way to explaining why Watford will be playing Championship football next season.
If it’s any consolation for Watford fans, a game against Leicester City at Vicarage Road at least holds special meaning, and a repeat of Troy Deeney’s last-gasp play-off heroics in 2013 which saw Watford beat Leicester 3-1 in memorable fashion would at least see them go out with a bang at home. But who that hero may be remains to be seen, as with a growing injury list to key forwards and the PL’s joint-second lowest tally of 16 home goals scored, extending their four-match unbeaten home H2H run (W3, D1) may prove a bridge too far.
Leicester had no problems on the goal front in midweek, as they swept aside basement club Norwich to secure a 3-0 victory and jump into the top half. A ninth-placed finish is realistically about as good as it’s going to get for the ‘Foxes’ this season, and anything lower than that would represent Leicester’s worst PL finish since their unsuccessful title defence in 2016/17 (12th).
It had been a rather torrid few weeks for Leicester prior to that victory over Norwich, with a UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final defeat supplemented by a five-match winless PL run (D2, L3). Brendan Rodgers’ side now have the chance to post back-to-back PL wins if he can mastermind another victory over his former employers, having done so twice already this season, hitting four goals in each win.
Players to watch: Leicester’s Jamie Vardy grabbed a double in midweek and also scored twice in the reverse H2H. João Pedro will likely lead the Watford line and his meagre two PL goals this season have both come after the 85th minute.
Hot stat: Leicester have scored exactly once in seven of their last eight visits to Vicarage Road.
