Despite a 1-0 win over Manchester United in their last match, Everton head into this clash with Leicester City just three points and one place clear of the relegation zone, therefore securing consecutive Premier League (PL) wins for the first time since September seems essential – especially with a trip to high-flying neighbours Liverpool to follow! Managerless relegation rivals Burnley don’t play until Thursday, meaning the ‘Toffees’ could secure a huge psychological boost by going six points clear of the drop zone by the end of the night.
Robust defensive displays have been key to the few successes Everton have had this season, as highlighted by five of their eight Premier League (PL) victories being accompanied by a clean sheet. With that context, it could be a worry for manager Frank Lampard that Everton have secured just one shutout against Leicester across the last 15 PL home H2Hs, although remarkably only two of those matches ended in defeat (W5, D8).
After their success in Europe just a few days earlier, Leicester were brought back down to earth on Sunday with a 2-1 loss at Newcastle United. They now come into this round in ninth place and 14 points adrift of the top six, meaning European qualification via the league looks dead in the water. The aim now for the ‘Foxes’ will be to avoid a first finish outside the PL top ten since 2016/17!
Away form will have to improve if they’re to achieve that goal, with six of Leicester’s last eight PL trips ending in defeat (W1, D1). The most recent at St James’ Park came despite taking an early lead, making it 17 points dropped from winning positions for Brendan Rodgers’ men this season – only three PL sides have dropped more.
Players to watch: Anthony Gordon’s deflected strike for Everton against Manchester United last time out meant he’s been involved in five PL goals across his last six starts at Goodison Park. Former ‘Toffee’ Ademola Lookman will be out to hurt his old club by netting a third PL goal for Leicester in as many competition matches.
Hot stat: Both teams scored in 12 of the last 13 H2H meetings at Goodison Park, though that’s not happened in any of Everton’s previous six competitive home matches.
