After their game against Burnley was postponed over the weekend, it will have been 11 days since the last time Leicester City took to the field. Even with notable absentees due to injuries and the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, the ‘Foxes’ could yet mount a top-four challenge considering they have games in hand over their rivals, though this match against an improving Tottenham Hotspur could prove pivotal in that aim.
Recent history suggests that Leicester could outfox Spurs here, as they have now won as many Premier League (PL) H2Hs across the last four clashes (W2, L2) as they did in 12 such matches prior (D7, L3). Not only this, Leicester are currently on their best winning run of home games (W5) since a seven-game run ending in December 2019.
Antonio Conte has already broken Tottenham’s record for consecutive unbeaten league games under a new manager (W5, D3) and he will now set his sights on keeping that run going by continuing his dominant form in personal H2Hs with Leicester (W5, D1). Doing so could see a quick Spurs start as they’ve scored a first-half winner in three of their five league wins under Conte.
However, superstitious Tottenham fans may be wary of the fact their side have lost four of the last five PL away games they’ve played on a Wednesday (W1), which is a marked downturn following just three losses from 15 such games prior (W10, D2, L3).
Players to watch: Leicester’s Patson Daka is expected to lead the line in Jamie Vardy’s absence, and each of his four scoring appearances this term produced over 3.5 total goals! For Tottenham, Harry Kane will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing Leicester as he’s scored more PL goals against them than vs any other side (15).
Hot stat: The last nine PL H2H meetings have averaged 4.33 goals per game and there’s never been a 0-0 top-flight scoreline in 88 meetings since 1925!
